Dual-scale digital refractometer with scales for measuring both Brix (to 85) and refractive index (to 1.500). Brix is a measure of sugar concentration that is used secondarily to measure total solid levels in colostrum. Values greater than 22 indicate that colostrum quality is very good.
This refractometer then also has the refractive index scale so that it can be used to measure serum total protein in calves 24-72 hours old. Levels greater than 5.5g/dL indicate that the calf has likely received adequate colostrum and will have a functional immune system. This tool should be used for averages to measure trends in colostrum management
